Animal monitoring and measurements
Students will work in groups and will be responsible for daily monitoring of animal
welfare and ensuring animals have ad libitum access to feed and clean water.
Students will also be responsible for routine husbandry practices.
Daily routine – before 9 am (7-days per week)
1. Check and fill the water troughs. When arrive to feed sheep turn on tap near
gate to central area to fill troughs – make sure tap is turned off before leaving.
2. Feeding lambs
a. Visually estimate the weight (in kilograms) of any feed not eaten
(refusals) from the self-feeder and record in Worksheet #1. Leave any
refusals in the self-feeder.
b. If estimated that 5-10 kg of feed from the previous day was not eaten,
then feed the same amount as was fed the previous day.
c. If estimated that less than 5 kg of feed from the previous day was not
eaten, then increase the amount fed the previous day by 10%
d. If estimated that more than 10kg of feed from the previous day was not
eaten, then decrease the amount fed the previous day by 5%.
e. Record all feed weighed in Worksheet #1.
f. When completed, please text Felicia or Jarryd as per the feeding
schedule to confirm feeding has been completed.
3. Animal health and welfare assessments
a. Assess the general behaviour of all lambs (eg rumination, feeding
interest, play, resting etc) and record the number of lambs in each feedlot
showing any abnormal behaviours (eg hunched stance, kicking at
abdomen, vocalisations etc) in worksheet #2.
b. Assess the visual health of all lambs and record the number of lambs in
each feedlot showing any signs of ill-health (eg discharge, flystrike,
physical injury etc) in Worksheet #2.
c. Assess the lameness of all lambs and record the number of lambs in
each feedlot with a pronounced limp in Worksheet #2.
