PURPOSE: The purpose is for you to be able to construct a case study of an organization by applying sociological theories to the internal workings of the organization and analyzing its lifecycle, history, and prospects for the future.

  • Times New Roman, serif”>Knowledge: After doing this assignment, you should be able to identify, understand, and apply central sociological issues in an organization of your choice. These include analyzing how the organization adapts to its environments and how it operates internally.
  • The Skills gained will help you better understand how organizations are created, survive, and decline as a function of their ability to adapt to the environment. Looking inside an organization you will evaluate how internal structures, bureaucracy, informal rules, and managerial techniques operate. These organizational skills should benefit you as you embark on a professional career.

TASK: Choose an organization with which you have some level of familiarity. It can be a place where you currently work or have worked, or a place near campus, or a place in your hometown. The key is being able to gain access to the organization to better understand what goes on there. Your analysis of the organization forms the basis of the case study assignment.

  • Visit the organization, interview someone with knowledge of the organization such as the owner, founder, or manager. You should also observe the organization in action.
    • What are the main features of the organization? How would you describe what happens there? What questions would you ask somebody who works there? How would you rate or evaluate the organization?
  • As you observe the organization, keep in mind the various sociological theories from the course and how they apply.
    • What examples of sociological theories are in evidence inside the organization? Select at least two of these that apply to the internal structures of the organization. Discuss these and illustrate with examples.
  • How did the organization begin? How has the organization adapted and changed over time? What is your opinion of the organization’s prospects for the future?
    • In explaining your answers, construct a lifecycle story where you analyze three main themes regarding the organization’s ability to adapt to its environment: 1) the process by which the organization was founded; 2) the growth and transformation (if any) of the organization; and 3) survival prospects and/or likelihood of deterioration.
