Module 1 – Case
Cultural Competence and Law Enforcement
You will now examine the areas of bias and cultural competency—and be able to differentiate the two, and see how they are related. To begin, go to the Background Reading and read the 10-page Understanding Bias: A Resource Guide. Pay particular attention to Implicit and explicit bias and cultural competency. Then you will take an Implicit Association Test (IAT). Go to https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html and click “Take a Test.” Then choose from the left (e.g., Arab-Muslim IAT). Follow the directions. Answer the following in 2 to 3 pages:
Explain the differences between bias and cultural competency.
After taking the IAT, what have you learned about yourself? Be specific.
Answer the assignment questions directly.
Stay focused on the precise assignment questions; do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.
Use reliable and credible sources as your references. Articles published in established newspapers or business journals/magazines are preferred. If you use the internet to find articles, make sure the sources are credible.
Reference your sources of information with both a bibliography and in-text citations.
For Modules 1 through 4, see the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper, including pages 13-14 on in-text citations. Another resource is the “Writing Style Guide”, which is found under “My Resources” in the TLC portal.
