First, explain why it might—and might not, depending on context/power—be considered deviant, incorporating concepts and theories we have covered in class. (5pts)
Next, provide your own perspective and explain why you do or do not consider this particular activity/behavior deviant. In so doing, please synthesize connections among experiences outside of class (e.g. academic experiences in other classes/settings, life experiences) to inform your argument. (5pts)
Lastly, articulate insights into your own cultural rules, mores, and biases and how these shape your view of whether or not the activity/behavior is deviant. How might your perceptions of cultural difference and societal fairness play into your view? (5pts)
The paper should be at least five pages in length; ideally, ten pages (double-spaced, 12-pt font). Likewise, it should have five or more scholarly references listed at the end—all of which should be cited in the text. It should be well written and mistake-free. (5pts)
(Note: This paper is how the SLOs in the syllabus will be assessed.)
Brief example (just a few sentences), drawing on the textbook:
“From a statistical anomaly perspective, left-handedness could be considered deviant, but from other perspectives it would not…. I consider left-handedness deviant because society is structured around right-handedness (e.g. see how few left-handed desks there are in classrooms)…. Moreover, in my childhood experience in Malaysia, teachers would often force kids to write with their right hands….”
