Method/Design
The experimental research design was applied in the study. This is because three components for experimental research design are evident in the study which are intervention, control group and randomization of the sample (NurseKillam, 2013). In the study, there is an intervention which included nursing students receiving education with fluorescent concretization. Second, there is a control group which includes nursing students that are receiving conventional education. Third, randomization of the sample where participants in intervention and control groups are randomly assigned.
Problem Statement
Hand hygiene is regarded as one most effective precautions to minimize the spread and transmission of pathogens. To the nursing students, educational tools used to teach them hand washing skills should help students improve hand hygiene and change their behavior by connecting theory to practical life. However, to nurse educators, hand hygiene remains one of the greatest challenges. This is because training nursing students on HH using conventional education is said to be ineffective. This calls for a need for nurse educators to identify other training techniques that will improve HH competency among the nurse students. This is important because HH help to reduce the transmission of healthcare-associated infections.
Purpose Statement
A randomized quantitative and experimental study is conducted which seek to establish whether training nursing students with fluorescent solution improves hand washing skills than when conventional or traditional training is applied. In the study, a comparison will be made between nursing students that received education on hand washing through fluorescent concretization and those who received education through conventional education to determine which group of nursing students have better HH skills and beliefs about hand washing. It is expected that nursing students that receive fluorescent concretization intervention will have higher HH competency hence providing the solution to nurse educators on the best training method to use to equip and improve HH skills to nursing students.
Independent Variables
Fluorescent concretization and Conventional training are independent variables. This is because they influence the HH efficiency. Training on hand washing using fluorescent concretization is an independent variable that measures the level of hand hygiene skills and beliefs attained by nursing students. Similarly, education through conventional is also another independent variable that is used in the study to help to determine hand hygiene skills gained by nursing students.
Dependent Variables
Hand hygiene is the dependent variable in the study. Independent variables are all measuring one thing, hand hygiene skills and beliefs gained by the nursing students. Therefore, a training method on hand washing skills that is considered effective, is the one that improves HH more (effect measured in study).
Intervention
Nursing students using UV fluorescent compound glo germ to visually concretize. The nursing students using fluorescent concretization, an intervention, is expected to have effectively cleaned their hand hence with higher hand hygiene competency than others.
Hypothesis
Null hypothesis: There is no significant difference in beliefs and hand hygiene skills between nursing students with fluorescent concretization and conventional education nursing students.
Alternative hypothesis: Nursing students with fluorescent concretization have better beliefs and hand hygiene skills than conventional education nursing students.
