WEEKLY REFLECTION 2
“There are no great people in this world, only great challenges which ordinary people rise to meet.” — William Frederick Halsey, Jr. (1882-1959) US Admiral
“Between what happens to us, the stimulus, and our response to that stimulus, is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. And in those choices lie our growth and our happiness.” — Viktor Frankl, MD, PhD Austrian Neurologist & Psychiatrist
“The great leader coaches I have worked with have on thing in common – they expect exceptional performance from all those they coach.” — Gregg Thompson Leadership Coach
“Ability is what you ‘re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” — Lou Holtz
“I ‘ve come to realize success doesn ‘t come from being a powerful leader; it comes from leading powerful people.” — Unidentified Advertising Manager
“Great men are said to have four things in common: They speak softly, have a capacity for hard work, a deep conviction for their cause, and a consuming belief in their ability to do it.” — John D. Hess (1918-2004) Writer
Over the past several weeks, we have reflected quite a bit on vision, understanding people, leadership, and the power of knowledge and action. Understanding people requires that you be able to understand what they want in return for their work, how they work best, what hampers them, their styles, what attitudes and perceptions they bring to work, how they interact with a team, and the nature of their hopes, dreams, and desires (Vanino, n.d.). What makes a great leader is not only understanding people but deeply understanding themselves too. When we get to know ourselves deep down, both our blind spots and our strengths, we increase our ability to relate to others, which gives us insight into our shared humanity (Racioppi, 2021). No vision and no action are aimless and is exhaustion of energy and time.
What I Learned This Week
This week’s reflection has helped me learn and better understand the importance of self-awareness, the importance of taking intentional acts to apply the knowledge we carry to continue growing, and the growth that can be attained through forging your own path through independence, commitment, and good acts. This week further helped me understand the grand contributions we make to those around us and how we can benefit everything and everyone we touch by giving the best of ourselves. It speaks profoundly to me how these quotes build upon last week’s connection with understanding people, having an actionable vision, and remaining committed to learning and growing. This week reassures that investing everything you have in the things you touch is empowering and fruitful for everyone involved. Understanding that leaders rarely know everything and asking the right questions makes them influential, powerful, and prosperous. Seeking continuous growth, knowing there is always more out there, and valuing everything a learning mindset must promise is vital to evolve and improving continually.
Amending My Behaviors/Work and Personal Relationship Ideas
This week’s reading has helped me learn how to change my behavior (and the reasoning behind it) to be a more self-aware, stronger, and better person, a better mother, a better wife, and a better professional and leader. The quotes in this week’s reflection enlightened me to the value of lifelong learning, the importance of understanding people in general, and giving the very best of myself and my abilities to everyone and everything touch. Before this course, I managed to be the person my family and society needed me to be (in my opinion). After the last few week’s reflections, and this week’s, I have a stronger desire to continue evolving, learning, and expanding in hopes of better serving those close to me and those around me, those who are personal, and those who I encounter in each circumstance. By amending my behaviors, I can remain focused on growth, a life of learning, and an understanding that each of these things will benefit everyone.
How I will Advance Globalization and Promote Social Justice
Some additional skills learned from this course are essential in driving change in today’s world. The world has become a global village making it easy for people to connect and interact using modern technology. Using the internet, we can launch a social media campaign to create awareness of our world’s public issues. We can also access and deliver personal growth and leadership seminars, mindset activities and strengthen our overall knowledge and power. Also, through the internet, we can offer support and encouragement to people in various countries. Specifically, concerning learning, knowledge, and understanding people, I can participate in learning courses and share my knowledge or insight there and with those around me. I can discuss my experiences with growth and learning with others to empower them to commit to a life of learning and strengthen themselves and those around them.
