Principle ethics is something that focuses on the importance of theories with different principles like beneficence, justice, and respect of autonomy. According to the American Psychological Association. (2017). “General Principals, as opposed to Ethical Standards, are aspirational in nature. Their intent is to guide and inspire psychologists toward the very highest ethical ideals of the profession” (American Psychological Association. (2017). There are five different principals that are very important and mean something that is beneficial to what is going on. They are (a) Beneficence and Nonmaleficence: Psychologists strive to benefit those whom they work and take care to do no harm. (b) Fidelity and Responsibility: Psychologists establish relationships of trust with those with whom they work. (c) Integrity: Psychologists seek to promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness in the science, teaching, and practice of psychology. (d) Justice: Psychologists recognize that fairness and justice entitle all persons to access and benefit from the contributions of psychology and to equal quality in the processes, procedures, and services being conducted by psychologists. (e) Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity: Psychologists respect the dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination. (American Psychological Association. (2017). The five principals show a lot of determination from a psychologist that knows what they are doing.

Ethics are coming together to deal with the right or wrong aspect of the problem you may be dealing with your morals or obligation. Having ethics means that you are wondering about the type of language you use, responsibilities, and an individual’s rights that they have to do what they need to do. “The Ethics Code is intended to provide guidance for psychologists and standards of professional conduct that can be applied by the APA and by other bodies that choose to adopt them. The Ethics Code is not intended to be a basis of civil liability: ((American Psychological Association. (2017). The ethics code has a lot of things they do to make sure it works and psychologist follows it to make things run successfully. Virtue ethics are theories that emphasize the mind of an individual’s character and mindset. “Many issues in ethics arise in relation to the contexts in which psychologists work. However, most ethical decision-making models reproduce the way in which psychologists tend to approach ethics by focusing on ethical dilemmas and proposing a step-by-step response to deal with them. When I worked in the hospital as an HIV Counselor there were a lot of ethical things the hospital had in place we had to abide by. There was confidentiality, HIPPA Law, policies and procedures, rules and regulations set in place for the hospital and the employees. Being that it was a hospital with a lot of employees and patient’s virtue ethics fit well because it pertained to the characters of the hospital and employees along with the patients that are being treated. I made sure that I did my job, and never let my anger or well-being get in the way of my work ethic.

Ethics is human morality, there are a set of rules and we as individuals should be able to distinguish right from wrong, good from evil. Morals and ethics are entwined together, as morals help us make ethical decisions. A person’s character and culture can influence an individual’s ethics. In a professional setting such as a counselor, therapist and social workers, all code of ethics that must be followed when counseling, it is more of a guideline to help the professional make ethical decisions.  The different ethics are mandatory, aspirational, principal and virtue. The differences between Mandatory ethics and aspirational ethics. Mandatory is the set standard and rules that fall under disclosing confidential information. Dr. Steven Behnke explains how ethics code applies to mandatory disclosure, an example would be a child abuse reporting or if a client threatens to harm a third party. My ethical duty would be mandatory reporting (2020). Aspirational ethics focuses on the understanding and purpose of ethical statues within a professional setting. According to APA 2020, “keeping up with the principles of human rights” (2020). Furthermore, aspirational ethics illustrates the highest standard of ethical practice, also aspirational is known as the best practice. Principal ethics is defined as what is expected in terms of right or wrong in terms of behavior, there are five key principles of ethics and they are as followed. Beneficence and Nonmaleficence, Fidelity and Responsibility, Integrity, Justice and respect people’s rights and dignity (“APA’s Five General Principles of Ethics: How Do They Matter to an Aspiring Scientist – EFPSA”, 2020). Virtue ethics are character traits such as generosity, loyalty, and honesty (2020). The differences in principle and virtue ethics are virtue is based around one’s character and principle is based around universal rules. Ethics in my profession of working with children who suffer from severe behavioral issues. Childhood is a unique stage in human development. Our responsibility to the children is to provide care and education in a safe, healthy, nurturing and responsive care to each child. We also have an ethical responsibility to parents which consist of keeping parents informed through consistent communication, cooperation and collaboration are all ethical responsibilities when working with this vulnerable population. The most important code of ethics is the commitment to the clients, counselor-client relationship. Respect client anatomy, dignity and promote client welfare. Confidentiality we have an obligation to safeguard information about individuals obtained in the course of practice. Last Mandatory reporting, which is my responsibility to report child abuse, or if we feel the individual is a threat or harm to themselves or others. (2020)
