PSC 201 American Government Research Paper Students will prepare a balanced research paper (NOT a persuasive essay or opinion paper) on a unique political topic that includes all of the following information. Content requirements: Explain the topic and provide basic information regarding its origins. Explain why the topic is important and/or controversial politically. Thoroughly and fairly explain two opposing viewpoints regarding the topic, giving equal effort to both viewpoints. Technical requirements: Paper is completely free of spelling/grammar/syntax errors, has been edited, and is appropriately formal in tone. Papers must be double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, with standard 1 inch margins. Students must use either APA or MLA citation methods, incorporating in-text or end citations and a works cited/bibliography page. For citation examples and bibliography page examples, see the Tutoring Center handouts in Blackboard entitled: APA Citation Guide and MLA Citation Guide. Students must use and cite at least eight valid sources in their paper, at least three of which must be newspaper articles (see the Helpful Websites link below) and one of which must be a physical book. Your textbook would be an acceptable book. No single-sourcing. You must use and cite more than one source within each paragraph. Do not cite Wikipedia. You may link to the original material cited by Wikipedia and cite that original material, if it is a legitimate source. When submitting, copy and paste your work into the submission box, and attach your work as a file. Papers in the Blackboard dropbox must be submitted in either .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats. If you are working on a Mac, you must convert your paper to a .pdf before submitting. Papers submitted must be a minimum of six pages in length (not counting title page, abstract, or bibliography/works cited page). Any paper fewer than six full pages in length when properly formatted will automatically earn a grade of zero. Automatic zero: Plagiarism. See the plagiarism rubric in Blackboard for further information. Papers submitted without proper APA or MLA citations or with incorrect citations. Writing a paper on a topic other than the topic selected or assigned at the beginning of the semester. Failing to submit a paper by the due date. Late papers will NOT be accepted, for ANY reason. Submitting a paper in a format that I cannot open or read (only .doc, .docx, and .pdf permitted). Mac users, see below and covert your paper to a .pdf before submitting. Submission of a paper fewer than six full pages in length when properly formatted. How to cite sources: See the Writing Center handouts in Blackboard entitled APA Citation Guide and MLA Citation Guide in Blackboard for citation questions.
