Scientific and Nature Writing

Noble Science writing requires excellent writing expertise and mechanics that are well established, investigated and exciting at the same time. There are different types of scientific writing; grant proposals, peer-reviewed journal article and literature review article that requires fruitful communiqué to your readers thus making your work easier to get to and professional growth as a scientific writer. In these case, we will be discoursing the criteria of Michio Kaku’s article published in the book he Best American Science and Nature Writing 2020. We will discuss the reasons as to why this article is worthy of been published in the book.

Initially, research is very imperative in science and nature writing. It tells and shows clarity in your writing. It is evident in Michio’s article he has done his research from both the history and recent happenings of science, the “industrial revolution of 1800 that was civilized by the Newton’s mechanic engine”, and presented his facts. It starts at the beginning of his article when he gives a personal experience that he had with his daughter after she saw the “geology principals list” he made, and she asked him “Daddy why would anyone want to be a scientist?” (Michio, 1) that made and it made him change his view of Science writing. In the article, he has used excellent and vibrant writing techniques, i.e. he does not use the sequential order of how experiments are done. Instead, he has slowly unfolded his research into stories that people could be excited to share at a dinner party. As a result, the article is worthy of being put out in this book.

Secondly, science article writers should always consider your method of conveying your facts, logical versus interesting. Michio has described his results in a biological relevance way using statics, i.e. when he directly reports the biological story of his work by using real-life and facts that occurred. For example, he explains the incident when physicists proposed constructing the Superconducting Super Collider built in Dallas because scientists preferred to work in a less-raucous environment (Kaku, 3). This “logical”, But he goes on to explain the exciting part where he explains of how a scientist has to leave their ivory towers and work: by which he gives us a snippet of how the scientist struggle by isolating and sacrificing themselves from the public to prove their researches, theories and projects to the world. He also explains the difficulties that they face pitching funds to sponsor their expensive projects, which is true because he involves the audience in the dramatic lives of scientists, unlike what people think their lives look like. He writes an exciting discussion (using the first person “I”) with proof that brings the results of his study, and he deserves to be published this book.

Mincho has used the structure-to-structure impression where he has logically sorted out his study and information in strategic and emphasized the critical information. For example, he clearly expressed his opinions on how science and nature writers should write exciting and captivating articles by putting himself in the shoes of the readers by listing unique features of excellent and exciting research stories, which was the main vital facts in the book. He has structured his sentences, paragraphs into three parts, i.e. the introduction of the article. He started by telling his own story and experience of how people perceived scientific articles as complex, and then he later narrowed it down to a simple and exciting story that any reader can easily comprehend. He also outlines the supporting information that is not exactly exciting but helps fill the logic gaps in the readers’ mind in the middle of the article that highlights the focus. For example, he has stated the facts about genetics and deadly diseases like Cancer, Corona Virus (Scientific diseases and use of scientific terms) and how they affect human existence and survival (Michio, 7). Therefore, this article warrants publication in the book.

Lastly, there are many concepts that a scientific writer should consider when writing articles or journals i.e. use of passive and active voice, rereading and cutting superfluous words from the context, have the manuscript reviewed by an intrinsic English speaker to ensure clarity and comprehensives in the article before finally submitting it for publication in the book. Always ensure that you have an abstract which is the essential section (always make it enjoyable) because the editors use it to decide whether the reviewers will review the manuscript. Michio has included an abstract in his article where he has clearly stated the overall purpose of the research: science writing articles and how they should be written, the problems scientists face when writing their articles. Second, he has stated his significant findings: logic points and the effects of disease like corona, cancer, and other diseases to society through his well-researched study. He has also summarized his interpretations and conclusion in one paragraph, i.e., Kaku has conveyed his well-researched article merely and reveals the dynamic and fundamental principle and brings everything into real life. He hopes that it is an article that his daughter can read and apprehend. Having followed all the rules and concepts of scientific writing, Michios article is highly recommended, and it deserves to be published in The Best American Science and Nature writing 2020 (The Best American Series ®). (Kaku)
